Burnt

I had a little funny moment during lunch today that reminded me so much of my quirky Dad. Lunch time for him was quite an ordeal. He would make his sandwich with great care and then add the side dishes, a chunk of cheese, chips, maybe a bowl of peaches or even the occasional prune. He seemed to have a great fondness of Fritos, which went especially well with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.Occasionally while digging through the crinkly bag of chips you would find a burnt frito. Oooooh. We would freak out as children when the crispy chip was found because it meant something just downright awful. My Dad always said that if you ate the chip " it would put hair on your chest." He was very serious and I took him very serious. We would laugh and giggle and contemplate whether we were brave enough to eat it and reap the consequences. I certainly didn't want hair on my chest! We were brave at times and someone would place the dreaded chip in their mouth and crunch it between their teeth. As far as I know, nobody ever developed the "hairy chest"as a child (maybe Keith! I think he stole all the burnt chips for himself in his teen age years!), but simply had a bad taste in their mouth.

Water Creeping In

It's been raining now for about 36 hours--NONSTOP! The rains have come back to Georgia in a big way again. This is a picture of the wall and ceiling in the Loony Bin. Ugh. I'm not happy about it. The wet spot keeps getting bigger and bigger. Obviously we have a problem somewhere outside in the roof.
The basement is flooding also, in the spot where the cement wall of the basement ends and it's just cement slab. The Georgia drought is definitely over!!! The rain is supposed to stop by lunchtime and start drying out. Maybe my basement and loony bin will dry out before the next downpour comes and I have a chance to get a fix it guy out here.

Honor Chorus

Landon had the privilege of attending Honor chorus the last weekend in October. He went on Friday to Athens, Ga and worked hard. They stay the night and practice on Saturday as well. We were able to attend a concert on Saturday afternoon to enjoy a performance to show off all their hard work. It was a great event with some pretty darn good choral performances.!

Dallin and Landon tried out for All State earlier in the month. It is a very rigorous audition that requires site reading, solo singing of assigned songs, etc. It's tough. Both boys found out last week that they both made it! They will be heading to Savannah, GA in February to spend a weekend with some awesome conductors learning more about choral singing. We'll enjoy a concert and a little trip to Savannah. We look forward to an awesome weekend.

State

Dallin's cross country team barely made it to the state competition this year. It was an exciting time for the Varsity North Gwinnett guys who had earned the right to go. After logging a crazy amount of practice miles from June to November, eating right, and getting plenty of sleep these boys were ready. They spent the night in Carrollton, GA and we met them on Saturday morning after an hour and a half drive. The race was scheduled for 8:30. This was a very exciting race because we were going to see the cream of the crop! The best guys in the state were running. Dallin made the goal to break his PR (personal record) of 17:34. We were hoping it would happen because he was not pleased with the last couple of races he ran.
Dallin warms up with his team at the starting line. They practice running out the shute, jumping, leaping...anything to keep their muscles loose and ready to perfom.
This was a high traffic area during the race. Can you find our little blonde-haired boy? He's always easy to pick out of the crowd!

The course had some killer hills, but overall was a great course. It was a beautiful, DRY day. It has been a very rainy season. Most of the races have had pouring rain and the course conditions were very wet, muddy and difficult. It's really been a challenging season.
Dallin relaxes with his team after the race.
The traditional sugar cookie snack that Dallin eats right after his race.
Dallin discusses his performance with Coach Bawcom. He broke his PR with a time of 17:25!!! What a great way to end the season. He came in 93rd out of 300 runners. Not bad for a little white guy!
We are so proud of Dallin. He has worked incredibly hard this season and really set some high goals for himself. I am amazed at the work ethic of these runners. It is an amazing sport that really brings out some high caliber kids. They are disciplined and very focused on being the best they can be. It's always about what you can be doing better to help the team. It's an individual sport as well as a team sport. We love this sport and can't wait to see Dallin excel his senior year in the fall!

PS Track and Field starts the end of February. Dallin will be racing in the long distance races. We'll keep you posted when the season starts.

Pumpkin Muffins

Thought I'd share a new favorite recipe of my family. The boys tried these pumpkin muffins and could not get enough of them. They make a ton--like 40+ muffins. We ate some for dinner and then I froze the rest in ziplocks. I would put them in their lunches. The boys ate them for snacks straight out the freezer--zap 'em in the microwave for 21 seconds and you have a perfectly warmed muffin with ooey gooey chocolate chips!

Combine:
2 2/3 C sugar
2/3 C oil
1 can pumpkin (15 oz)
2/3 C water
4 eggs

Add:
3 1/3 C whole wheat flour
2 tsp baking soda
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp cloves (I don't use)
1/2 tsp baking powder
2 C chocolate chips

Bake 350, 20-25 minutes. Fill 2/3 full.

Boo!!!!

Easton was a ninja for our Halloween night of Trick or Treating. It was a drizzly, cold night and we didnt have very many trick or treaters. Landon went out with the teen ager crown so that left Easton and I to head out together. It was a little strange just having Easton. Next year I will have to plan better for him so he can hook up with some friends. I wasn't ready for Landon to not be with us this year, but he is getting older, you know!
Dallin went to a teen age cool Halloween party for vampires and witches. He was supposed to dress as a vampire and the girls were witches. He had a great time.

Here's our little Eaton all dressed up for our Ward Halloween party. As you can see he was a pirate. He won the funniest costume award for the children. I guess they thought the parrot on his shoulder was funny. He was a little miffed about the award. He didn't understand why they would give him the funniest costume award. He didn't think his costume was funny.

No pictures of Landon this year. I dont' know what happened, but he didn't make it into the camera. Better luck next year. He was a lion.

Beautiful Smile

Dallin had his braces taken off October 5 at 10:00. Look at his awesome smile!!! These pictures don't really do it justice, but oh well. He's super happy and smiles all the time. He wears his retainer at night and will for the rest of his life.
