The Graduate

It's official--I am the Mother of a high school graduate. Doesn't that just sound weird?!? Last Saturday evening Ashton walked and received her high school diploma. It was a fun evening watching her enjoy the moment. She looked so mature in the new outfit she picked out to wear. The black cap and gown looked very official. Her choir sang three separate numbers during the program and she was right in the front singing and enjoying every moment of it. I think she will miss singing in choir the most out of high school. She had a great four years and loved high school! We look forward to watching her in the future and seeing what great things she will accomplish. Good luck at BYU--we love you!

IHOP

A tradition was started a few years back of going to IHOP the morning after school gets out. We get up just like a normal school day, get ready, and head off to IHOP for a grand breakfast. This year we were also celebrating Ashton's graduation as a family. Easton loves ordering the Happy Face pancake breakfast. Stephen and Dallin ordered some grand feast with a cream cheese stuffed french toast thing. Looked and tasted fabulous. Ashton and I had a Strawberry covered Belgium waffle and Landon got French Toast with eggs and bacon. We ate so much food that we didn't have to eat until dinner!

Soccer Party

Easton is finished playing soccer for the Spring season. He did very well for his very first season of soccer. He wants to play it again in the fall. Stephen enjoyed being the Coach, although he did get a little intense! He had quite the team to work with. One boy had mild Autism and another was profoundly deaf. One little guy enjoyed the ants and looking in the grass. The team lacked the aggressiveness of the other teams they played. All in all it was a great season and a good experience for Easton. These pictures are from the soccer party at Ci Ci's pizza. Receiving the trophy was the highlight of the evening!

Tuna Fish Sandwiches

Every time I make tuna fish I find myself thinking of my Mother. She taught me how to make tuna fish growing up and I have always added the ingredients that she did; Dill weed (crushed in your hand), Bon Appetit (a great spice), Miracle Whip, and dill pickles. There is one change, however I made to my recipe--Mom always used to get onto me about stirring it too much. She liked her Tuna a little bit chunky. I can still hear her telling me to be gentle and not stir it so much. Well, that is one thing I don't do now. I like my tuna well mixed--Not Chunky! Each time now when I make the tuna I can hear my mother in the background telling me not to blend it so much. Some things you just can't get out of your head. It's a battle every time I make it. I know that's weird, but I do think of my Mother while making tuna. Mother's recipe makes for a great, tasty sandwich that we all love whether it's chunky or blended nicely! Thanks mom.

Last Day of School!

Today is the last day of school. We are all very excited and feel bad for other people, due to the fact that the get out June 4th. That is absurd! This is Ashton posing for the camera as she walks out the door.
Heres Dallin posing as he walks out the door.
Easton poses right before the bus comes.

Landon is not walking out the door. He woke up early to go to Piano lessons. He is posing though.

School's out in three days!

This is Landon. I cannot believe that school gets out in three days! It seems like yesterday was the first day of school. Summer break is on the way! When do everyone else's schools get out?

Seminary Graduation

Last evening Ashton graduated from seminary. I know some of you are thinking that it's no big deal, but let me tell you what a big deal it is. For the past four years of high school Ashton has been getting up between 5:00 and 5:30 to be ready to go by 6:00 am. They listen to their teacher until 6:50 and then they walk over to the high school. These seminary kids are sleep deprived! They stay up too late and a lot of them are involved in after school activities. Going to bed early isn't always an option.

We are happy that Ashton finished what she started and graduated. I hope she learned about the scriptures and that her testimony has grown through this experience. Dallin completed his first year--only three more to go. Woohoo! Enjoy your sleep this summer and not getting up before the sun does! You're both awesome kids.

Keep On Reading....

I finished reading, Nothing But the Truth. Loved this book. Very thought provoking. It takes place in a school setting. You're getting points of view from the main character, middle school student(can't remember his name) and the teacher he loathes. It really brought me back to the teaching days and all the politics of teaching and what those dear teachers really go through behind the scenes. It was a quick read and a good one for kids. It makes you reflect on what is really truth. Marilee, you would like this one if you haven't already read it. You can read it in about 3 hours.

I'm now reading The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, by Avi. We are doing a book club for the month of June in our YW. I'm prereading this book to see if this will be our selection for book club. I really like it so far. I'll let you know how it goes. I have book club tonight so I will be getting my new book selection of the month this evening. I hope it's a good one!

Stephen's Mother

“My mother, Sandra Carroll and I on Mother’s Day. She is the hardest working, most selfless person I have ever known. I am blessed to be her son.”

New Salad Recipe

Here's the great salad recipe I had for Mother's Day. Very simple to make.

In salad bowl add the following:

Spinach and romaine lettuce
sliced carrots
grape tomatoes
cranberries
almonds sauteed in salad dressing
feta cheese, basil and sundried tomatoe variety

Dressing:
Good Season's Italian dressing packet
Follow dressing instructions to make, in place of vinegar use Balsamic. It's yummy.

Father and Sons Outing

The boys and Stephen had the traditional Fathers and Sons Outing over the weekend. Easton was so excited and didn't want to go to school Friday so that he could pack. (He's always looking for an excuse to get out of school--it's sooooo boring!) When Stephen got home from work the car was loaded and off they went. They were heading up to Lake Lanier to meet the ward. When they got to the campsite that they always go to another ward was there. Stephen soon discovered that they were at the wrong campsite. Well, the story goes that the boys decided that since it was already late and it would be later by the time they arrived at the real campsite andit would be dark and time to go to bed. Soooo, they decided to go to the movies instead. They went and saw Ironman and loved it. They boys came home around 10:30 telling me that this was the best campout they have ever had. mmmmmmm

Ashton and I went out to dinner for Mother and Daughter outing. We rented a couple of movies and were not real happy to see the crew coming home early. I enjoy my boyfree weekend once a year. We saw August Rush. It was entertaining, not a fabulous movie.

Happy Mother's Day to Me!

I have the greatest children and husband. They showed me how much they loved me by making me a great dinner: Steak Kabobs, salad (new recipe, loved it) watermelon, yummy warm bread, strawberry dessert and honoring me with some beautiful cards and gifts. Roses came earlier this week from Stephen and some Godiva chocolates. They were delectable! Easton made a great card and vase at school. I just love those homemade treasures. Dallin and Landon wrote loving notes in a cute card and Ashton gave me the gift of a pedicure. Man--I will love that! I gave myself the gift of a new flower bed that I worked on all week. I finished up at 10 pm Thursday night with all of the planting and digging. I even had to turn on the car headlights so I could see to finish. That's dedication! To all the mothers out there in the family--hope you had a great day. Isn't Motherhood great! Love you guys!

I love my Mom!

Happy Mother's Day, Mom! I have the greatest Mom. These are some of the things I love about her, in no particular order.

1. My Mother is a fabulous cook. Her recipe box is full of awesome creations that she would share with her family. Some of my children's favorite recipes have come from my Mom. I love lemon ribbon ice cream pie, Strawberry Freeze, Ritzier Chicken, Chicken Broccoli casserole, Sesame Chicken, Fluffy Potatoes, Cranberry Sauce, Dream Bars, and Egg Casserole.

2. Presentation is everything! That's a big thing I learned from my Mom. Whether it's how you dress and look or how your table looks or how you present your food, it was always to be our best. The meat platter on Sunday always had a sprig of parsley. The food was always aesthetically pleasing. Cookies were arranged on a beautiful tray, instead of a paper plate-no matter where we were going. We were always dressed clean and neat, sloppiness was just not acceptable.

3. Our home was a beautiful place to live. I really do remember it being clean and tidy. The living room was a special room that we didn't go in unless company came. Mother helped us learn to take care of the home by treating it with respect. Feet didn't go on the furniture, we couldn't sit on Mom's bed. She liked to create and decorate. She always was changing things around--a new arrangement or piece was added here and there. She had a traditional, classy home.

4. Mother is committed to the gospel. She shared her testimony with us by how she lived her life. Church was her life and she helped our testimonies grow. She always did her best in her callings. I remember her when she was RS president, the primary chorister(She was great!), and Stake Homemaking Leader (Now that was stressful just to watch, but she was amazing!) Our family was always the last ones at church--that's just the way it was. I think we had to be the last ones in the building even if we weren't in charge! When she went on her mission with Dad to Palmyra, NY she set an amazing example for my family. She is always willing to rise to the challenge and to grow as a person. Serving in the church has allowed her to stretch and get out of her comfort zone.

5. Sunday dinners were always a special event at our house. The dining room table was set with the elegant china, crystal and silver. A fabulous meal was prepared. We stayed in our Sunday clothes for dinner because it helped us remember that the Sabbath was a different day than the rest of the week. I loved those dinners--I helped get everything ready. That's how I learned to cook by spending hours in the kitchen with my Mom. We made amazing things together. Sometimes we would have company--missionaries, a new family at church, relatives. My mom always seemed to be prepared for any number of extra people at any time. After the dinner we would always "hang out" at the table just talking and laughing and sharing funny stories. Things always came out in those discussions that Mom and Dad never knew happened. Craig's stories of hunting were awesome! Brad and Craig always had some funny event to share. I miss those dinners. Thanks for bringing the family together on a regular basis.

6. My mom is an awesome Grandma. She has created such a special relationship with my children. They know that their Grandma loves them. She is so good at remembering the special events. When the children were smaller they were able to spend many hours with Grandma. She was always willing to just sit and play with them or read a special story. She liked to spend time in the kitchen with them cooking and teaching. Grandma always had some fun little creation to do up her sleeve. Now that we are living far away, the children still feel a connection with her through emails, phone calls, birthday remembrances and now this crazy blog. They feel honored if she leaves a comment about their post.

Mom,

You taught me how to be a Mother by your example. Thanks for loving me and teaching me and helping me to be the person that I am today.

I love you!
Sheila

What a Concert!

Ashton and Dallin performed tonight in their High School End of the Year concert. It was a fabulous concert, one of the best we have been to. (And we have been to a lot!) This was Ashton's last high school concert so she was a little emotional. She has had a great experience participating in the chorus program all four years of high school. North Gwinnett has a great choral program. Ashton and Dallin are very fortunate to have such a wonderful director who teaches them so much.
Ashton is singing with all the Seniors. The guy next to her is her very good chorus friend. He played the lead opposite Ashton in the play, "HONK!"Ashton and Dallin received awards for their participation in All-State Chorus. Ashton received some other awards as well.

Dallin did an amazing job singing a solo with his men's group. He really amazed us. Here's a video of Dallin singing. This video doesn't do his voice justice. He did a fantastic job. I can't believe he's my son! Enjoy.

Once Upon a Mattress

Landon participated in his school play, Once Upon a Mattress. With early morning practices that Mom drove him to, the cast prepared for 3 1/2 months for their performance. We were able to watch Landon on stage last Thursday and Friday night at the high school. This was the musical story of the Princess and the Pea. Landon played the part of a knight. He had a few lines and sang with the chorus(towns' people) and did a few group dance numbers. We were so impressed by Landon. He said his lines so loudly and clear. He always knew what he was doing and acted very well. We are proud of his accomplishments and for having the courage to try out for the part and take on the challenge of doing something new, on stage, and in front of a very large audience! I don't understand why my children choose to do these things on stage--they didn't get their courage from me. Thanks for sharing your talents with us, Landon!

Landon hangs out with some of the cast. Incidentally, there were 4 LDS boys and 4 LDS girls in the production as well as 1 girl who worked behind the scenes.

Easton always loves hanging out with his big brother, Landon who he always claims as his best friend.

Giant Frosted Mini Wheat Terrorizes Town!

Easton wanted this posted. He found this giant Frosted Mini Wheat in his bowl and thought this was the coolest thing. He has had it for two weeks now.

Keep on Reading

I finished two books this week that I thought I would share--for those of you who read. First I read, Rebecca, for my book club. It was written in 1938 (I believe) and has become kind of a classic. Ashton had to read it this year for her AP Lit class. It was fun because we were able to "discuss" the book on a deeper level. She asked me pretty deep, thought provoking questions about all the symbolism stuff and character analysis. Rebecca was a very different mystery with a lot of unexpected twists and turns. I found myself feeling compassion for the murderer. It was weird how the author made you feel that way. It was a fairly easy read. I would recommend it.

The second book I finished was Fablehaven. This was discussed at our last book club meeting as a book that was awesome and should be read. I read it and it was enjoyable, but I didn't think it was incredible. It was fun and entertaining. There are more books in this series, but I don't think I am moved to read anymore.

I'm currently reading Nothing But the Truth, by Avi. I'll let you know how that goes. I like it so far. And...I do know that titles of books have to be capitalized, but the blog program won't let me do it.

Playing in the Dirt

It was a beautiful day yesterday and I got the "bug". After I volunteered in Easton's class I took a side trip to Lowes before I headed home. I was just going to go and admire the new annuals and get some ideas. Well, it happened. Everytime I start looking at flowers I just have to get started in the yard. I bought a ton of compost and peet moss and headed home. With my gardening gloves on and my spade in hand I began the process of cleaning and weeding the flower beds. So many things died last year because of the drought. We've had good rains this season and my perennials have really perked up! My friend came over in the afternoon and I was able to share some Day Lilies and other perennials that needed to be divided. I also started a new flower bed in the back--under the family room window. It's needed to be done since we moved in. The new soil has been added and I'm ready to plant. Of course, that means a trip to the nursery to start acquiring my new, colorful flowers of the season. I really enjoy time spent wandering around the store looking for new varieties and colors of plants and imagining how they will look with the other plants in my garden. I love flowers and trying to create beautiful landscapes. I'll keep you posted on my progress and post some pictures when it's finished.

My body is sore, especially my back from leaning over to dump all the mulch. Oh, but it's worth it! I look forward to enjoying this beautiful season of color.
